ACH Week’s Best: Brittany Howard, with special mention Miller

I had to backtrack for this week’s A Crowded Hour Week’s Best.

Which is a darned shame. Being the pointy end of the festive season, and all. Fashion pickings should have flown thick and fast.

Alas, with Beyonce all but absent from public life (excluding one excellent crazed Christmas cardi), my disinterest in the Jenndashians overcoat-crop stylings and the Star Wars red carpet being a total hotch-potch of full-gown-lady-lace-crazy, slim have been the sartorial pickings.  Continue reading

Welcome home, Wonder Dog

Patti lives – !!!

With those two words (a rather unnecessary hyphen) and three exclamation marks, my heart sung and skipped a beat.

Our family dog, my beloved mother’s beloved pet, had escaped death yet again and was, by a remarkable twist of fate, returned to her kennel at 5 Jolly Street.

It had been a tumultuous week. Continue reading

ACH Week’s Best: Jennifer Connelly

The A Crowded Hour Week’s Best titled landed on the fine form Jennifer Conelly cut earlier this week in an outfit which combined street cred with red carpet cool.

I must confess, Connelly’s presence in the seriously haunting movie, Requiem For A Dream, and my inability to get past that god-awful scene where she performs for the male party, have tormented me for years.

The outfit below may be the first step in undoing the horror that one particular scene has etched on my brain.

We have a long way to go, but those booties sure are moving us along.

I am big into those heels, that skirt and her lazy jumper. It is a neat, sharp and wholly interesting look, and her hair is divine.

She is a showpiece for cool. And her husband and handbag, the perfect accessories.

Praise be.

ACH Week’s Best: Clooney and Harris

Oh Lordy, it was a week of slim pickings and yet more top fashion from Amal.

And within such a climate, what on earth is one to do, but laud Mrs Clooney with yet another (here and here) ACH Week’s best title?

To mix it up a touch, I decided to throw in a look – which I normally dislike – from one Naomie Harris.

You might remember her for playing the voodoo witch in the third Pirates of the Caribbean, but I shall remembering her going forward for this cut-away number.

But first to Mrs Clooney.

By all rights, she should be a first rate Human Rights lawyer, be married to the man formerly known as Hollywood’s MOST Eligible Bachelor, and wear clothes worse than a sack of potatoes.

Not so with Clooney – she puts the concept of having it all to absolute shame.

So here she is, the proof in her very own vintage Lanvin pudding. Wearing a couture-space-suit-culottes-crop-situ which is all parts excellent on her, when worn on anyone else, it would have been horrifically absurd.

Absolute power to her.

It takes a woman with a trunk-load of pizazz to wear reflective fabric in the style of culotte and chunky-vest crop, and if there is one to do it, Clooney is surely her.

Moving right along – we are a day late with this, and all – I would like to honour Harris for her cut-away number.

I had figured I was over this look – too many Gomezs, Swifts and Jenndashians, for my liking, had paraded the carpets with their hoo-haas and girls trapped by hap-hazard cloth – but for Harris in this sublime number.

Harris brings me back to a neutral home ground, where I am down with the cut-away and keen to see it more.

I think it may be the loose fit and its crisp simplicity.

The glory days, hey?

ACH Week’s Best: Chung and Roden, with special mention Redmayne

To be fair with you, selecting the ACH Week’s Best was somewhat of a battle this week.

We had fashion awards in Britain, music awards in Sydney and a movie premiere in Los Angeles, and still the fashion offering failed to set this keyboard on fire.

It took a lot of browsing to determine the following, but then, after making my sartorial selections, and sitting with them for an afternoon, I am mighty pleased with where I ended up.  Continue reading

The good and the oh so bad

I actually didn’t think it possible for there to be so much good and so much bad in the one frame.

To be so captivated on my first glance, and horrified on my second.

To devour one get-up and long to un-see the other.  Continue reading
