Hip hurrah to Hares and Hyenas

In lovely ol Fitzroy, one of the world’s few gay and lesbian bookshops, Hares and Hyenas, will this year celebrate its 20th birthday.

If you’re a writer, getting your work published is much harder than a walk in the park and if  you’re gay, lesbian, or transgendered, hills and foot weights and much more can be thrown in your way.

To mark their 20th, the owners will hold 20 events as part of The Word is Out celebrations, including book launches, readings and poetry slams, tied in with the 2012 gay and lesbian Midsumma Festival.

This story, featured in today’s Age is just lovely. I admire the owners behind Hares and Hyenas, who have stuck at what they believe in and no doubt suffered through some tough times to keep this book shelf open to the gay community. They’ve also given gay writers an avenue to tell their stories and Fitzroy a very beautiful space.
Check out the festival site to find the book shop events to tickle your fancy.
